Kenya
I received a call from a woman who said she feared the worst for some puppies in the area.   She said she was driving on a country road and saw a very skinny, malnourished German Shepherd chained to an old rickety dog house and she thought she saw a tiny puppy by her side, and she wasn’t sure if it was dead or alive as it wasn’t moving.more...

Mario and Precious
Mario and Precious ended up at our rescue within weeks of each other.   They both were very young and came with serious issues.    Mario had been horribly abused as a young puppy by a cruel and ignorant man, and Precious had been dumped in the middle of winter and had serious health issues.   She fought pneumonia, frostbite and chronic upper respiratory infections for a very long time.   more...

Angel

ANGEL, the Golden-Doodle that no one cared about!

I received a call in April ‘08 from a local vet clinic who wondered if I could help out a poor dog that some good Samaritans had found along a two-track road on State land here in Michigan.    They said that the animal was weaving and staggering and could hardly stand up when they first noticed  her and she was such a mess that they thought it was a dying coyote.

Upon closer examination, they realized it was a dog!   Angel was in such a bad way, the vet clinic didn’t even know what kind of dog she was underneath all of the mats, yeast infections and filth.   The people who found Angel could not afford to pay the vet to care for her, so thus the phone call to me.

I told the people to take her home and give her small amounts of water and food and I would be over to look at her.   She was so starved and malnourished that she vomited everything up for several days.   The minute I saw her, I KNEW she was a Golden-Doodle.

She was obviously either lost for a long time or someone had dropped her off on State land and left her to whatever fate she awaited.

Angel was 33 pounds (normal weight is 50 to 55 pounds) - she had mats that were over 16 inches in length, her ears were so infected that it looked like she had tar coming from her ears, she had a broken canine tooth most likely from eating sticks and bark to survive, parts of her skin was black from yeast infections and her feet were so torn up with mats and abuse from the cold and the terrain, that it took a long time to get them to stop bleeding.   Her ears were so bad, that Angel ended up being totally deaf when all was said and done.

After Angel started holding down food and water, I took her up to our vet clinic where they examined her and basically thought she would be better off euthanized.   I refused to do this as this little girl is a fighter as she survived one of the harshest winters that we have had in years here in Michigan and she deserves a chance at a good life, where she will be loved and cared for.

The next day I took her to my groomer/friend and she worked on her for hours.   Angel was not very cooperative as she was in a lot of pain, especially her feet.   My friend made the comment that “this is no ‘Angel’”, but she too understood what this poor girl had been through and knew that this was not her true nature.

We got Angel on her feet, she actually started gaining a little weight and even galloped around the yard, and fell madly in love with my husband.   At the time that Angel came into our rescue, we had (and still have) a lot of large rescue dogs and we just didn’t feel that Angel could get everything that she needed here.    We started contacting other rescues in Michigan and got in touch with the Golden Retriever Rescue, and we started talking about Angel.   Normally, they do not take mixes, but after hearing the story and seeing the pictures, one of the members decided to take Angel on herself.

We met half-way and I when Angel was introduced to her new foster mommy, I had an inkling that Miss Angel may have found her forever home!   My instincts were right and it wasn’t too long that Angel had worked her way into their hearts and she was adopted by this wonderful family.   Angel is now “The Dood” or “Doodle” and she has become the Queen of the Castle and is truly loved and cared for and will never want for anything ever again in her life.

This was truly a wonderful girl and to know that she is healthy and happy and most of all LOVED, is truly the best reward I could ever have asked for.
