Mario and PreciousKENYA’S BRAVE FIGHT TO SAVE HER BABIES
We were just finishing up our normal chores on a very cold winter when I received a call from a woman who said she feared the worst for some puppies in the area. She said she was driving on a country road and saw a very skinny, malnourished German Shepherd chained to an old rickety dog house and she thought she saw a tiny puppy by her side, and she wasn’t sure if it was dead or alive as it wasn’t moving.
I got the directions and took off. When I approached, I realized that I had been at this house before and pretty much knew that the old man who lived there was ill and was unable to properly care for any dog, let alone a dog having puppies in the dead of winter. This was the same home where Freckles and her siblings lived and were removed the year before (See Freckles’ story).
I saw a beautiful Shepherd girl who was very thin. She was being very protective of her territory. At first glance, I did not see any puppy on the ground and was relieved. I brought her some fresh water and some dog food and she ate and drank eagerly. Within minutes, she was allowing me to get close to her dog house. The house had no straw, had holes the size of softballs in it and the chain that she was tied on had been wrapped around a tree several times, which kept her from getting inside the dog house. I prayed there were no puppies.
I reached in the dog house and heard little growls coming from the back corner of the house. I got my flashlight so I could see what I was getting into and much to my despair, it was one of the saddest sights I had ever personally witnessed. There were five frozen babies along one side of the house and in the farthest corner were four little ones still alive! How they were staying alive without being able to reach their mom to nurse and how those four were able to stay warm enough to survive is beyond me. Mom’s chain was so tangled that she could not reach the puppies inside the dog house.
I got her untangled and knew that she was ok for the moment and removed the four living puppies and stashed them in my van and headed for my vet’s office to have them checked over. They were all pretty hungry, but overall they were all ok.
We were able to remove the mom from the premises later that week and she was immediately transported to a German Shepherd rescue out of the area. She ended up being one of the most trainable dogs these people had ever dealt with and she was eventually adopted out to a great family.
Kenya’s pups, Yogi, Thunder, Autumn and Haley all ended up being adopted by great families.
